Rapid Emergency Response
Kakhovka Dam Explosion
In the early hours of June 6th, 2023, the Kakhovka Dam collapsed due to an explosion. This dam held a pivotal role in supplying energy, drinking water, irrigation, and facilitating river transport across multiple regions in southern Ukraine. Additionally, it served as a crucial water source for industries in Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, Marhanets, and surrounding areas. The release of over 18 cubic km of water over 3-4 days poses a severe threat to nearly 80 settlements, impacting approximately 100,000 residents, with 40,000 directly affected.
In our Rapid Emergency Response WHI provided thousands of individuals with essential drinking water. Simultaneously, evacuation efforts were carried out to assist those who chose to relocate to safer areas.
Millions Struggle for Water and Food Amid War
The ongoing war in Ukraine has shattered the provision of drinking water and food for countless Ukrainians. Damaged infrastructure has led to a decline in water quality, while a shortage of crops and vegetables has spiked food prices, pushing millions into extreme need.
Particularly in front-line areas, World HAND International persists in reaching and assisting the most affected communities.
Survival is a daily battle. Immediate help is crucial.
In the face of adversity, every small action counts.
There is no time like the present. Give a hand today to someone in need.
"Yes, but where should I go. This is my home. And it has been since more than 80 years.
89 year old Katarina lives in a small village by the front line in Kherson region. Katarina has lived in her house for most of her live. She grows vegetables and fruits in her backyard, which was always a small but additional source of food to provide for the family. She lives at home by herself.
When our team got there, we saw the fire in her front yard with a kettle, mattress and quilts and other belongings around it. This is where she sleeps, out in the cold. Too dangerous of the destroyed house collapsing.
Many houses in this area have been destroyed through attacks by the russians. "A few neighbours have left the village, many are staying and are trying to rebuild what is left of the walls. Where should they go, and how would they get back? This is where many have lived all their lives. We cannot go anywhere and abandon what we have. This is where we come from."
She later said "Even if it is frightening hearing strikes and shootings on a daily basis, I am too old to start new. To go somewhere else. Who can guarantee that as long as I will need it I will be provided with aid? I don´t have savings. What there was has long been used in these past 2 years. I won´t be able to survive. So I´m staying and I am hoping for better days."
Just like Katarina and neighbours millions of people in Ukraine continue living under the harsh conditions in front line areas. Not everyone has a choice.
Katarina and her neighbours were provided with sleeping bags, functional outdoor clothing, food and water packages.
So many others are not.
Hungry. Cold. Scared. Hope?
What would we be without hope?
Millions of Ukrainians fight for justice, for freedom for a live in Ukraine tomorrow. Many have to stay back at the front lines, others choose to. At the front lines we meet people who support others at the front as much as they can. Whether it is making candels, blankets and tents out of old fabrics, sharing the last pieces of their dried food and medicine with their neighbors or sharing the savest bunkers with the people who stayed.
Everyone does what they can - and this, while facing the danger to ones own life. It´s hope that gives them strength to do so.
After more than 2 years of war people have run out of savings, food, medicine, water. Others have lost all their belongings to attacks. Who is lucky, has firewood to burn to warm themselves around the fire.
World HAND International supports people in highest need at the front lines. We work where infrastructure is destroyed, no running water, electricity, supermarkets or medical services working.
We support to give hope. Be part of giving hope to people who really need it in these dark and cold times.
